This is a set of necklace and earrings that I created this week for exhibition at the Nexus Community Gallery. It's for the members' show that opens at 3pm on Sunday the 1st of August. I handcrafted these with polymer clay. The surface is sealed with "Magic Glos" a doming resin to give these the look of glass. The clasp is a gold magnetic ball. Virginia Yelavich, one of my students, from Southwest Rocks introduced me to this black velvet cord that I used on this necklace.
They're reminiscent of the Indigenous Burial Poles of Australia. These poles are placed around the burial site during the ceremony. They symbolise the status and prestige of the deceased. Participants in the ceremony are painted with natural ochres in many different designs, transforming the dancers and providing protection against recognition by the spirit of the deceased.
